Excellent article. I am still soaking it in, so I will probably be back. Some quick thoughts:
1. Go Open - Yes a million times. Stale data to you is lifesaving to a non-profit group for example. Or that free data make you want better data to make your model smarter. Also, always make it EASIER for customers to like you.
2. I agree. I kinda wanna say that without the API and the selling of it, you really don't have a platform.
3. Okay this one is so on point. GIFs are EO as Social Media is to Marketing!
4. My favorite quote so far. "But I think constellations should be intentional." This point is very true. You can't design a product that you never use or even have a clue why someone else would use it, IMO.
5. If you fancy yourself a platform provider, your goto market strategy has to involve solid partnerships. You can always tell bad players by how their partners talk about them.
6. This point made me think about data lineage. Can you or should you, be able to trace path to the source of the data inputs?
7. This is an excellent point. Earlier adopters of a new product categories will pay more. What is the new product category solution you have and what will it cost for you to make a profit?
I really learned a lot from this article. I am a GIS person by education, training and experience. I look into the world of EO once in a while in wonder and then run away. It seems big, expensive and non-user friendly.
After reading this, I am beginning to realize that my assessment was unfair. EO is in the most exciting time for folks that like to help make something transformational. So much to think about!
